Description
This creamy and rich frosting made with browned butter and cream cheese is perfect for cakes and cupcakes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup unsalted butter, browned and cooled
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 3 to 3 ½ cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Add the butter to a light-colored saucepan over medium heat. Stir frequently as it melts, foams, and starts to brown. When golden flecks appear and it smells nutty, remove from heat and pour into a heat-safe bowl. Chill until soft but not solid.
- In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese until completely smooth.
- Add the cooled brown butter to the cream cheese and beat together until fluffy and well combined.
- Slowly mix in the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well between additions until the frosting is thick and smooth.
- Add vanilla extract and salt. Beat until everything is fully incorporated and the frosting is creamy, spreadable, and pipeable.
Notes
- Ensure the butter is not too hot when mixing with cream cheese to avoid melting.
- This frosting can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
