Description

This creamy and rich frosting made with browned butter and cream cheese is perfect for cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, browned and cooled
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 3 to 3 ½ cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Add the butter to a light-colored saucepan over medium heat. Stir frequently as it melts, foams, and starts to brown. When golden flecks appear and it smells nutty, remove from heat and pour into a heat-safe bowl. Chill until soft but not solid.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese until completely smooth.
  3. Add the cooled brown butter to the cream cheese and beat together until fluffy and well combined.
  4. Slowly mix in the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well between additions until the frosting is thick and smooth.
  5. Add vanilla extract and salt. Beat until everything is fully incorporated and the frosting is creamy, spreadable, and pipeable.

Notes

  • Ensure the butter is not too hot when mixing with cream cheese to avoid melting.
  • This frosting can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
